Another Trust

9 Aug

Seriously?  Esler is suggesting setting up another trust.  Can the Invercargill City Charitable Trust not be used?  Should we be wasting more time and money administering yet another trust in the city?  Venture Southland seem to be the main ones using the Invercargill City Charitable Trust but there is nothing preventing it being used for any other projects.  The Board would just support any applications for the statue project for funding applications.  The monies raised are tagged specifically for that project.  Funders fully understand these arrangements.  CTOS even have a special place in their applications for it.  It is common practice.  It saves costs.  It is so simple that my brain may explode out of frustration.

His first task was to see if there was enough interest in forming a trust. By the end of the meeting he decided there was.

A meeting attended by about 8 people and by the end of the meeting he had decided their was enough interest.

Amazing how some people can get publicity for doing so little. Would the times cover others who talk with 8 people?

8 people at this meeting and NO consensus. The meeting could even be said to have fizzed, One ratepayer was dubious, concerned that ratepayers would fund the Statuary. One attendee expressed that formal Statuary should not be elevated above the need for policy and investment in public art generally, as currently pubic art is decided by Park managers and City engineers and what pops up around the city is random and often structural engineering pieces rather than artistically creative. Two others added to the voices above. Other attendees were the Rodney Sutton representing brass bands, a descendant of Lithgow, and i think Mrs Sutton, and a friend of Mr Esler and possible Trustee also enthusiastic for a statue of Lithgow.. The scope of this Trust seems pre-defined as “Statuary of a notable historic figure’. (Not even a theme such as Te Marama and his discovery of Oyster Beds, or Whaling/Whaling Ships/Hatch and his oil; or Muttonbirding) The notable historic figure seems pre-determined as Alex Lithgow. (who wrote his compositions outside Invercargill from the age of 21) And the artists seem pre-selected as Gillie and Marc, Australia, who offer the not to be beaten opportunity of “free making- we just need paid for the materials” . (Bad luck NZ sculptors- who just can’t match the effective-marketing-strategy of the large Gillies and Marc Empire…) The energy for a statue of Lithgow is not without merit. But Im not sure why the public are needed: the public voice seems unwanted. Lithgow Statue supporters should just get to it… And Start fundraising
