Good morning all, my suggestion since day 1 of the Rena debacle was and still is compulsory New Zealand Citizen Licensed Coastal Pilots for all foreign ships in transit around our coastline. This practice is commonplace in many parts of the world, and the Barrier Reef system is one example of such close to home. We cannot ignore the obvious message from the incompetence of Renas Master and 2nd Officer here. Certificates of competency throughout the IMO/STCW WORLD ARE BEING DUMBED DOWN,bit by bit.Celestial navigation has all but disappeared on board as button pushing takes over instead, and there is pressure to remove manual navigation from examination syllabuses as well..

Got something to say?
