The Joke Of The Year Has Already Been Told

19 Jan

Mayor Tim has stolen the prize for joke of the year….already!  His first opinion piece of the year has him expressing his desire to have Invercargill City Council as the most transparent council in New Zealand.  Now that you’ve stopped laughing, consider this, Mayor Tim has had over a decade to achieve that.   It was Mayor Tim who used his casting vote for the ‘status quo’ over the car park deal.  It is Mayor Tim that diligently reads out public excluded issues, sometimes from A through to M, at the end of council meetings.   He has had many opportunities to further transparency.  I am yet to see him submit any ways to improve transparency to his Mayor’s Report.  He may only be one vote around the table but he is to only member that can freely submit ideas to the agenda.  No approvals needed, no seconder required…what an opportunity to be heard and effect change.  To date they have been wasted opportunities.

Here’s a few ideas to get Mayor Tim going:

LGOIMA requests shared like Dunedin City Council

Tabled documents online after the meeting (they’ve done it once or twice but it never lasts)

Webcam for meetings – if not live at least recorded and archived online

Discussion and debate over whether to go into public excluded (you could start small by supporting the likes of Abbott and Pottinger when necessary)

Read todays Times and you see how long it lasted. His ONE goal is transparency. On the same page you see he does not favour Karen Arnolds ideas for reviewing the way council does business. So does transparency mean something different to him. I would have thought independent oversight would be the most transparent process ever. Interesting to see the old guard talking the dire consequences of any savings. Pathetic isnt it. Wish they would change the record. The savings in not having to constantly pay out the mayors assistants would be enough to fund a person to do the review.

Got something to say?
