Absolutely Positively Wellington!

9 Dec

Wellington are getting stuck into things by the look of it.  They are now looking at the living wage for all council employees at a cost of $500K  (for now).  I wonder what it would cost down here?

Could be done at no cost. just rearrange all council salaries from the top down. Would not impact those up on the big money hardly at all. I would be frightened at just giving those at the bottom a wage rise of 15% as it could flow through the other way. Set a salary cap and make it happen within the cap

Granted a 15% pay rise would be an issue. It would need some work and it’s good to see WCC discussing it at least.
I doubt we could “rearrange all council salaries from the top down”, we wouldn’t attract a high calibre CEO like King..lol

I don’t see why your suddenly encouraging higher wages at the council. I thought you were up in arms with their performance and yet you want to pay them more?

I only posed the question as such but do consider the big picture view on this though. The article had a case study of a worker on $14.40 and the effects of that. I could go off on many tangents on the impact of low wages and the social cost etc but I don’ think that is what you intended. I usually have a go at the cllrs not staff as such but council as a collective could stop buying properties on a whim and suggesting rugby grounds and over the top CBD upgrades…over $5m in ‘grants’ . I would hate to think of the amount of legal opinions and so many other things…

the people on the low wages have very little say on the effectiveness of the council. Its the ones who have half an eye on their job and the other half on their pay-packets that are the issue. It is the world over and seems to now be almost accepted. The argument is about the gap between the top and bottom. And lets face it the most important council employees are those that remove your rubbish and keep your sewerage from backing up. If they took a month off there would be an outcry. If the mayor and his manager went overseas for two months no one would even notice

Got something to say?
