Quake fears prompt Bluff Service Centre relocation

5 November, 2013

The Bluff Service Centre will be relocated to the Bluff Municipal Chambers because the current building has been assessed as being a serious earthquake risk.

“We have just received a report that shows the Bluff Service Centre building does not meet the required building safety standards,” Invercargill City Council Chief Executive Richard King said today (November 5). “To ensure staff and customer safety, Council has decided to relocate it temporarily to the Bluff Municipal Chambers.”

He said the Service Centre would remain open at the current address (98 Gore Street) until the move to the new premises at 16 Gore Street. Council hoped the move would be completed by the end of next week. “We will move the premises as quickly as possible as we are mindful of staff and customer safety. We are also working with New Zealand Post and Lotto to ensure a smooth transition between the two premises.”

Mr King said Council and the Bluff Community Board would investigate future building options, and added: “We are committed to having a service centre in Bluff.”

Rumour has the building at 10%, I can’t imagine it to be that low but raises the question – what is the Town Hall buildings rating?  This is going to cost some money…ratepayer money.

Is it April 1st because today just can’t be for real?
